Destruction from two huge earthquakes hit a nation beset with political and economic crises so dire that 7.9 million Venezuelans were already in need of humanitarian assistance.

LA GUAIRA, Venezuela — One of the most recognizable landmarks in the Venezuelan state of La Guaira is now a temporary morgue, guarding the bodies of thousands of people who died in devastating twin earthquakes more than a week ago.
