John Cornyn faces a primary runoff for the Republican nomination against state Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Paxton got a late boost in the form of an endorsement from President Donald Trump a week before the race. Cornyn got 42% to Paxton’s 41% in the first round of the primary on March 3. It’s Trump’s latest effort to shape GOP primaries featuring incumbents who have defied him in some way, and this one could have general election implications: Cornyn has been arguing that Paxton would be a liability in a matchup with Democratic nominee James Talarico, a state representative.
