1996 Toyota Crown Majesta Toyota is a brand known for building some of the most reliable and affordable vehicles in the US car market. They have also produced numerous fun to drive, economical vehicles that have helped them gain a serious fanbase worldwide- but one thing they haven’t ever sold in the United States is a luxury car. This is a market that they have catered to since the late 1980s with the addition of the Lexus brand, but for decades, Lexus didn’t exist in Japan and instead, Luxury cars were sold under the Toyota banner. To those that know Toyota and the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), the Toyota Crown sits above anything badged as a Lexus in the United States and is the pinnacle of luxury in the Japanese car market. Thanks to United States’ 25 year import laws, these Toyota Crowns are now eligible for importation to the US so enthusiasts over here can finally experience what right hand drive luxury feels like.  This 1996 Toyota Crown Majesta was imported to the United States by JDM Cars of Shoreline, WA in 2021 and is being sold with all the necessary importation documents and a Washington title. Finished in a two-tone color scheme of Ebony Teal with gray bottoms, this Crown’s boxy shape is reminiscent of the contemporary LS400 but has more of a classic look to it that makes it truly timeless. The Crown Majesta is a special variant of the Crown which sits as an even more luxurious variant, and the only Crown available at the time with a V8 like this car is equipped with. A set of 15” multi-spoke wheels and unique Crown badging around the vehicle indicates to onlookers that this car is something special and not just another Toyota sedan.  To those that don’t know, the interior of the Crown may be confusing- where most luxury cars are equipped with leather on every surface, Toyota determined that high end cloth seats are actually a far better option for its top end cars. This makes sense when you think about how unpleasant leather can be in both very hot and very cold temperatures, a nice cloth doesn’t result in the same sorts of burning hot or freezing cold when you first sit down. That isn’t the only special feature on the interior of this Crown though- a fully digital gauge cluster, paired with heads up display is installed, along with automatic headlights- all of these are common on cars these days but were unbelievable tech 27 years ago. Additionally, the ice cold air conditioning features automatic swinging vents that help cool the entire cabin, and the rear seat is equipped with audio controls.  Powering this Crown Majesta is Toyota’s famous 1UZ V8 connected to a stout 4 speed automatic gearbox. This V8 produces 265 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque which is plenty to move this car down the road with ease. But what this engine and gearbox are notorious for is their longevity- without much more than basic servicing, these components are notorious for achieving many hundreds of thousands of miles in cars like the LS400 and FJ100 Land Cruiser. When this Crown landed Stateside, it was treated to a thorough servicing with fluid flushes and a full inspection as well as new tires. It is also worth noting that although this is a Japanese Domestic Market car, it shares its underpinnings with some American market cars so parts are available without having to wait for them to come from overseas.   There aren’t many options if you are looking for an affordable luxury car that will also stand out- but this Toyota Crown Majesta may be just the vehicle you are looking for. Thanks to its forward looking technology, you don’t give up much of anything when compared to a far more modern car, and its tried and true power plant means that you won’t find yourself constantly broken down on the side of the road either.
