Social media video and photos geolocated to locations in the region show ash-coated trees, blazes raging in fire-blackened buildings and dark smoke-filled skies. Satellite images show whole blocks and neighborhoods flattened.

The truce, which came into effect on April 16, was “only a ceasefire in name,” said Bilal Saab of UAE-based research and advisory firm TRENDS Research and Advisory and who worked as a senior adviser at the Pentagon under the first Trump administration.
