Used 1997 Excalibur Cobra
1997 Excalibur Shelby CobraThe Shelby Cobra is a truly beloved automobile among car enthusiasts and its no surprise why. A lightweight English body, that is paired with a powerful American V8 that makes for a supremely exciting driving experience and one of the most sought after vehicles on the collector car market today. Since shortly after the Cobra's debut in 1962, there has been a string of companies that aim to recreate the formula, and most get pretty close. With just over 1,000 real Shelbys built, these recreations allow enthusiasts to experience what makes these cars so exciting, at a fraction of the cost of an original. One of the manufacturers that produced these Cobras was Excalibur Automobile Corporation of Milwaukee, WI. Building these kits primarily in the 1990s, Excalibur utilized heavy gauge rectangular tube for the frame, and featured a hand laid fiberglass body. Weighing in at about 2,500 lbs, these Cobras were actually offered for sale through Costco in the mid-1990s and offered a 2 year 24,000 mile drivetrain warranty as well as EPA and DOT compliance. This example is finished in red with a pair of white over the top stripes, and features all of the hallmark Cobra design details like chrome side exhaust, LeMans-style fuel filler and a chrome roll hoop behind the driver. The wheels are 16-inch Halibrand style wheels built by Compomotive and sit in front of 4 power disc brakes. The interior is pleasantly simple like you would hope for in a Cobra, but does feature a few extra niceties that make it a great place to do some touring. A pair of high-backed leather wrapped bucket seats are separated by a carpeted transmission tunnel with a tall leather wrapped 5-speed shift knob that falls easily to hand when you're behind the wheel. The dashboard features an AM//FM stereo with a cassette deck, and above that sits a pair of vents for the HVAC which is fitted with a cool blowing air conditioning system.Powering this Cobra is a stout 347ci Ford V8 that is topped by a pair of Edelbrock 4bbl carburetors. Aluminum heads and intake manifold help the car breathe more easily and take some weight out of the nose, while an MSD ignition ensures a strong, reliable spark. This engine was an upgrade over the original 302 and was installed less than 2,000 miles ago with records on file and has been built for enjoyment, but also drivability around town. Power is then sent through a Borg Warner 5-speed gearbox to the rear wheels via a Ford 9-inch rear end. When you factor in that this car still weighs right around 2,500lb, it feels remarkably quick and sounds fantastic when you're under way. This Excalibur Cobra has spent its entire life in Washington, sold to its first owner on Mercer Island in January of 1997. It has always been well kept and will be the perfect back-road companion.
