Used 1964 Jaguar E-Type
1964 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster The Jaguar E-Type is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever produced. After its debut in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type in both coupe and convertible body styles became one of the most sought-after sports cars of the era and has a dedicated fan base even more than 60 years after it was first produced. This 1964 Jaguar E-Type Roadster is from the first series and the final year that the 3.8-liter Inline-6 was offered in the chassis. Finished in what is arguably the best color for the Jaguar E-Type - Opalescent Silver Blue - this car has clearly been restored at some point in its life and remains in stunning condition throughout. The light metallic blue paint is paired with the slim chrome bumpers that became an E-Type hallmark, as well as the covered headlights which disappeared in 1967 with the introduction of the transitionary “Series 1 ½ “ cars. Sitting on a set of chrome wire wheels with knock off spinner hubs, the car is equipped with redline radial tires which really complete the period look. Like with the exterior, the Series 1 interior is the best looking of all the E-Types. Unlike later cars that featured a pair of small back seats, these are dedicated 2-seaters and feature aircraft-style bucket seats, which are upholstered in gray leather on this car. Slide into the driver’s seat and you are met by a large 3-spoke steering wheel with a thin wooden rim, that frames a set of Smiths gauges with white on black text. There aren’t many creature comforts in the E-Type, but a period correct radio is fitted, along with a center arm rest which is very nice on longer drives. Classic race car style lap belts have been fitted for some added safety, as well as a fire extinguisher just in case. Sitting under that long hood is a 3.8-liter Inline-6 with one of the most beautiful dual overhead camshaft cylinder heads ever placed in a car. Although the later Series 1 ½ and Series 2 cars featured a higher-displacement 4.2-liter engine, horsepower was the same at 265 hp, and the larger engine only gained a slight bit of low down torque. That being said, where the 3.8-liter car accels is when you rev it- the sewing machine smoothness makes you want to wind it all the way to its 5,500 rpm redline, while it is making outstanding noises out of its twin tailpipes. Recently, this car’s rear end was rebuilt, and it also received new shocks and brakes all around. When the E-Type came out in 1961, it was truly ahead of the competition, offering not just disc brakes at all 4 corners, but an independent rear suspension, which was still a few years off for companies like Ferrari. Even today, there are few, if any, cars that are better looking than an early E-Type Jaguar. This roadster is particularly appealing thanks to its stunning color combination, recent maintenance and special Series 1 touches. In the context of vintage sports cars, these Jaguars really are as good to drive as everyone says and will make you smile every time you slide behind that wood rimmed steering wheel.
