The ‘machine’ that fixed baseball’s strike zone and helped modernize the game

In the early 2000s, baseball used technology to judge umpires’ strike zone. Players and umpires bashed it, but QuesTec set the stage for today’s Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System.

In late May 2003, Arizona Diamondbacks ace Curt Schilling was pitching a so-so game against the San Diego Padres when weeks of pent-up frustration came pouring out. That day, Schilling gave up nine hits, walked two batters and allowed three runs in an eventual loss to the Padres, a team that would go on to finish with the third-worst record in baseball.
