Clinical trial aims to give more organ transplant patients lives free of harsh drugs

Doctors have been experimenting with adding stem cells to kidney transplants to get patients off immune-suppressing drugs. Now, they’re trying the approach with liver transplants.

LOS ANGELES — Five years ago, Natalie Staubus received a part of her sister’s liver to treat cirrhosis. The transplant was a success, but the immunosuppressant drugs she had to take to prevent her body from rejecting the organ caused nausea, fatigue and debilitating headaches.
