A report of a crash west of Arco-Butte County Airport came in around 12:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. ET). The planes “collided midair and both went down into a sage and grass covered area,” the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said.

One pilot was killed and the other pilot was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, the sheriff's office said. It’s not clear what the injured pilots condition is as of Friday morning.

The names of the pilots were not released pending next of kin notification.

The sheriff’s office said the circumstances of the crash are under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were notified and are investigating.
