Officials are investigating after an on-duty Customs and Border Protection officer fired his gun during what he claimed to be an assault following an apparent fender-bender near the entrance to JFK Airport, authorities say.

Shortly before 5 a.m., the Port Authority responded to reports of a two-vehicle accident on the southbound Van Wyck, by the entrance to JFK’s central terminal, officials say.

There, officers found the on-duty customs officer, who they say told them another driver had attacked him after a minor vehicle accident. The officer said he fired his duty weapon several times during the altercation.

No other people were on the scene when Port Authority responded, nor has anyone been located at this time. No injuries have been reported.

The Port Authority’s investigation is ongoing. Drivers headed to JFK were plagued by related traffic delays throughout the morning.
