Democrats calling for Biden to step aside: Tracking updates and reactions

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, became the first to call on the president to withdraw, but other congressional Democrats have followed since then.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has been facing calls from congressional Democrats to drop out of the 2024 presidential race in the wake of his dismal debate performance last month.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, on July 2 became the first one to publicly say the president should step aside, but more have followed since then. On July 10, Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont became the first Democratic senator to call on Biden to drop out of the race, calling it "for the good of the country."

In addition to lawmakers' public calls, at least two Democrats made similar remarks privately in a meeting with colleagues.

Still, other lawmakers have defended the president, including members of the Congressional Black Caucus. In a letter on July 8 to Democrats on Capitol Hill, Biden insisted he was staying in the race, saying that "the voters have spoken."

Here are the members of Congress who have said Biden should drop out of the presidential race:
