Drones were first observed late on Friday over the nearby Volkel air force base. Weapons were deployed to try to shoot them down but the devices got away.

After more sightings on Saturday, airspace around the airport was closed until around 23:00 local time (22:00 GMT).

Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said authorities had "taken measures" without elaborating.

It is the latest in a series of incidents at military installations and airports in northern Europe in recent months. Russia has denied accusations it was involved in them.
