Thousands of counter-protesters rallied on Wednesday against anti-immigration demonstrations in English towns and cities.

Police had been braced for further violence after a week of rioting and disorder.

Gatherings in locations including north London, Bristol and Newcastle were largely peaceful, as counter-protesters formed the bulk of the crowds.
