The BBC's Mark Lowen was in St Peter's Square as the two prayed, which he described as a "hugely symbolic moment in theological history".

The Queen was seen at the ceremony wearing white after previously keeping to the dress code of wearing black when meeting the Pope earlier in the day - seen as a sign of respect.

The service inside the Sistine Chapel brought together clergy and choirs from both the Catholic Church and the Church of England, of which the King is the supreme governor.
