The Lukianivska McDonald’s in Kyiv is an island of normalcy amid Russia’s bombardment — and a symbol of Ukraine’s post-Soviet aspirations.

KYIV, Ukraine — At 8:59 a.m., the most bombed McDonald’s in the world is bustling. Commuters coming off the nearby metro stream in to order coffee. A woman in a tracksuit stares out the bulletproof glass window at the charred and twisted metal of a burned-out mall. But at 9 a.m., staff and patrons stop. It’s time to honor the tens of thousands killed in the war. The machines keep beeping through the daily moment of silence.
