Days after a federal judge issued an order aimed at reining in federal immigration agents’ use of chemicals on protesters, immigration agents used tear gas Tuesday to disperse what a spokesman described as a “hostile” crowd on Chicago’s Southeast Side.
The crowd, according to witness interviews and news footage, had gathered in the area of 105th and Avenue N after a collision between a Border Patrol vehicle and a car the agents were pursuing, a spokesman said.
At least four people were arrested, including two undocumented immigrants and two U.S. citizens for resisting, according to their families.
A CBP spokesman said in a statement to NBC 5 Investigates that they were pursuing undocumented individuals in a car when the driver “rammed” into a Border Patrol vehicle.
The two subjects then tried to run and were caught, the spokesman said, adding that the crowd that gathered afterward “eventually turned hostile” and that “crowd control measures were used.”
