The law, passed last year as part of the Trump administration’s “big, beautiful bill,” requires some Medicaid participants to work, volunteer or go to school for at least 80 hours each month. The requirements have already rolled out in some states, including Nebraska, and will be implemented across the country by Jan. 1.

The rules apply to some Medicaid patients in states that expanded access under the Affordable Care Act. Certain people, such as those who are pregnant or medically frail, are exempt.
