Police are investigating an acid attack in Georgia where a woman was left with chemical burns, officials said.

The incident unfolded just after 8 p.m. Wednesday near W. Waldburg and Whitaker streets, near Forsyth Park in Savannah.

First responders found an adult woman suffering chemical burns to her skin. She was treated at the scene then transferred to Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

Police said an adult male, who was not known to the victim, approached her and attacked her with a “liquid chemical.”

“Our first priority is the well-being of the victim, and our detectives are working around the clock to determine exactly what happened,” Savannah Police Chief Lenny B. Gunther said. “While this was a disturbing incident, we want to reassure our community that we are actively investigating and have increased patrols in our parks out of an abundance of caution.”
