Doubts cloud Venezuela's election results as both Maduro and González declare victory

Concerns over the legitimacy of Venezuela's presidential election persist as the country’s opposition and its incumbent president both claimed victory on Monday.

Thousands of people took to the streets in cities across Venezuela on Monday, as the South American country’s entrenched leader and the country’s opposition both claimed victory in the presidential election.

After election officials declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner over opposition candidate Edmundo González, violence erupted in some parts of the capital, Caracas, where protesters threw Molotov cocktails and stones at riot gear-clad national police officers.

A man fired a gun as protesters moved through the city’s financial district, The Associated Press reported, although no one suffered a gunshot wound.
