Hurricane Humberto remained an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm early Sunday as it churned west-northwest over the southwestern Atlantic, with forecasters warning that Bermuda could start feeling its effects within days.

The National Hurricane Center said in an early morning update that Humberto was about 585 miles south of Bermuda with a maximum sustained winds of at least 155 mph. The storm is expected to remain a major hurricane, passing west of Bermuda by Tuesday evening. Humberto evolved into a Category 5 Saturday night.

“Humberto should remain a powerful major hurricane for the next few days,” the hurricane center said.

Even far from land, Humberto is already generating dangerous swells. The hurricane is expected to send life-threatening surf and rip currents toward Bermuda, the northern Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the U.S. East Coast beginning Monday.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Nine, spinning about 285 miles northwest of the eastern tip of Cuba and moving north-northwest at 7 mph, is expected to rise to tropical storm status later on Sunday, according to the hurricane center.
