Southhampton Town police said in a news release that they received a 911 call early Thursday that a woman was lying on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays, a hamlet on Long Island in New York.

Police said they found the woman, who was later identified as Burack, "unconscious with serious injuries, from apparently being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene."

Burack was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police said.

Police added that they have launched a manhunt for a driver in the suspected hit-and-run, who remained at large Friday afternoon.
