Officer pulls suspected DUI driver from burning wreck after crash into Tacoma gas station

TACOMA, Wash. -- A Tacoma Police officer pulled a driver from the burning wreckage of a car that had just crashed into a gas station...then arrested him for suspicion of DUI.

The driver had just left a fast-food restaurant parking lot on 38th Street just before 4 p.m. Wednesday when he struck an SUV, according to Wendy Haddow with Tacoma Police. The driver then careened across 38th Street, through a Brown Bear car wash parking lot and into a nearby gas station where it struck a gas pump and a second car that had a mother and her 7-year-old child inside.

The driver's car then caught fire and the driver remained trapped until officers arrived. Tacoma firefighters arrived and quickly doused the flames.

The mother and child were not injured and Haddow said there were only minor injuries to the others involved.

Police haven't said whether the causing driver was suspected of being impaired by alcohol or drugs.
