The Ukrainian president said the eastern city had been completely destroyed after months of fighting.

"For today, Bakhmut is only in our hearts," he said.

On Saturday, the leader of Russia's Wagner mercenary group said his fighters had taken full control of the eastern Ukrainian city. Ukraine quickly denied the claim.
