The fish are thought to have become confined to a freshwater lake that had swollen to three times its normal size following the flooding in the Thessaly region of Greece.

The lake waters have receded significantly since then, forcing the fish towards the sea where they cannot survive.

Thousands of silver bodies covered the port, creating a stench that has alarmed residents and authorities.
