The Department of Justice has issued a subpoena for records related to the travel history of Fani Willis, the Georgia district attorney who charged President Donald Trump in an election interference case in 2023, a source familiar with the Department of Justice’s actions confirmed to NBC News.
The New York Times was first to report the story.
The scope of the investigation is not yet clear, and it is not clear whether Willis is the target of the inquiry or whether she will ultimately face charges.
The development comes as Trump in recent weeks has publicly pressed Justice Department officials to investigate or charge his political foes, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
A grand jury indicted Trump and 18 allies in Georgia in 2023 over their efforts to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss in the state. Willis, the district attorney of Fulton County, brought the case against the then-former president, accusing Trump and his allies of orchestrating a “criminal enterprise” to keep him in power.
