Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, a Florida Democrat born in Ecuador who served in Congress from 2019 to 2021, said she learned of the outbreak of violence through a group chat among family and friends.
“It was heartbreaking to hear about it. … I was extremely concerned for their safety,” said Mucarsel-Powell, who is now running for U.S. Senate in Florida. “It’s heartbreaking to see the kidnappings and … the cartel-driven violence.”
