2008 Honda S2000 CRWhen Honda debuted the S2000 in 1999, it was an immediate hit among driving enthusiasts everywhere. Seeing the success of the Mazda Miata, the S2000 took everything that was beloved about that car, and turned up the excitement to make one of the ultimate drivers cars of the 2000s. Powered by a 2.0, and later 2.2 liter inline 4, one of the things the S2000 became legendary for was the VTEC-aided high redline and the need to rev the car to make the most out of it. For 2008 and 2009, as the S2000 was getting ready to leave the United States, Honda built a limited run of track-focused variants known as the Club Racer. Honda intended to produce the Club Racer for two years, with 2,000 units total being sold, but due to the economy at the time, only 699 units were produced between 2008 and 2009, since becoming quite collectible.This S2000 Club Racer (CR) has been under the care of just three owners from new and shows 43,048 miles.The S2000 CR was only offered in four colors, with arguably the most striking being Apex Blue Pearl, which is seen on this example. The CR didn't receive a power increase, instead, the emphasis was on improving handling, reducing weight, and making the car feel even more alive from behind the wheel. Instead of the power folding fabric soft top that was the norm on all other S2000s, the CR was fitted with a removable hardtop in Berlina Black, and the space that the folding top would have previously sat was filled with chassis bracing. The engineers also spent time in the wind tunnel, crafting a new front lip and large rear decklid spoiler that reduced the overall drag coefficient of lift by nearly 80%. One of the other signature design elements of the CR is the unique speedster humps sitting behind the two seats.The interior of the CR was only available with one configuration- seats wrapped in black Alcantara with yellow contrast stitching and yellow/black mesh centers. This setup is lighter than the usual leather, but it is also far grippier and does a great job holding you in when doing aggressive cornering. Carbon fiber trim covers some of the dashboard, and a CR-specific aluminum shift knob sits lower than the standard model and offers shorter shifter throws. For maximum weight savings, both air conditioning and the stereo were no-cost options, but to make this car more enjoyable, both were fitted in this example.Sitting up front is a 2.2 liter inline 4 with VTEC variable valve timing that helps this small engine produce 237 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. As the 2.2-liter variant of this engine, this car will rev to 8,200 rpm, and maximum power is achieved at 7,800. Although the CR is mechanically largely unchanged from the standard S2000, several special features take the CR to the next level. A sharper steering rack makes turn-in spectacular, and a revised exhaust system opens up a bit more sound. The suspension is both lower and stiffer, and the 5-spoke rear wheels are 10mm wider than standard.The last few years have seen all S2000s increase in value, with the Club Racers leading the charge. With such low production numbers and a focus on improved driving experience, it is no wonder that low-mileage examples have already begun cresting the 6-figure mark. This car is in the right color and has a perfect amount of miles on it- still low enough to be a desirable collectible, but not so few that you are scared to take it out for a weekend drive.
