Republicans to tout 'unity' with Trump in his first visit to Capitol Hill since Jan. 6 attack

Former President Donald Trump to meet with congressional Republicans, including Mitch McConnell, in his first visit to Capitol Hill since before Jan. 6.

WASHINGTON — Three and a half years ago, President Donald Trump incited a violent riot at the Capitol in a bid to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory and remain in power, a special House committee concluded after a lengthy investigation.

On Thursday, Trump is making his first visit to Capitol Hill since before the Jan. 6 attack as Republicans give a hero’s welcome to their party’s presumptive 2024 nominee.

Less than five months before his rematch with Biden, Trump is meeting behind closed doors just blocks from the Capitol with House Republicans and will huddle with GOP senators in the afternoon as the party discusses campaign messaging and its legislative strategy in 2025.

As Trump arrived through the back, a handful of protesters held signs at the front of the Capitol Hill Club, reading things like “Failed Coup” and “Democracy forever, Trump never.” The Democratic National Committee, meanwhile, has set up a mobile billboard that will attempt to follow Trump between meetings while airing footage from the Jan. 6 attack.

Trump and Biden are locked in a competitive race, and control of Congress is up for grabs this fall, but many in the GOP express optimism about sweeping the 2024 elections and acting swiftly on Trump's agenda.
