House Republicans face headwinds as they seek to pass budget for Trump's agenda

House Republican leaders are eying a high-stakes vote this week on a sweeping budget resolution to pass President Donald Trump's agenda.

WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Republicans were desperately working Monday to salvage a high-stakes vote this week on a sweeping budget resolution to pass President Donald Trump's agenda of trillions of dollars in tax cuts and additional funds for immigration enforcement.

But Republican leaders told members of the whip team in a closed-door meeting Monday night that a vote set for Tuesday could slip to later this week, according to a GOP source in the meeting.

"We'll see," Johnson said after he was asked by NBC News whether he planned to push ahead with the planned Tuesday evening vote.

His comments came after he privately met with multiple groups of GOP lawmakers who've been reluctant to get on board with the budget blueprint. And Johnson said he planned to hold more meetings late into the night.

"I'm still undecided," Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., one of the GOP moderates who have expressed concerns about possible cuts to Medicaid, said after meeting with the speaker. "I know there are a slew of people out there who are still lean nos. And I think you have a couple hard nos."
