San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey missed his team’s Monday night game against the New York Jets with a calf and Achilles injury. He was listed as inactive a little over an hour before kickoff.
The 49ers replaced him with Jordan Mason, who dominated the Jets' defense. The undrafted rookie rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown in San Francisco's 32-19 win.
McCaffrey was limited in practice all week because the injury. He was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report, but he told the media Friday he was not concerned about being held back for Week 1.
McCaffrey has been dealing with an injury to his calf and Achilles since August. He did not participate in the preseason before he returned to practice Tuesday.
McCaffrey, 28, is a key player for the 49ers’ offense. He carried the ball 272 times for a league-leading 1,459 yards last season. He also caught 67 passes for 564 yards. He scored 21 touchdowns for San Francisco in 2023, his first full season with the team after he arrived in a midseason trade from Carolina in 2022.
