As of Wednesday morning the storm is north of Puerto Rico with maximum wind speeds of 70 mph. The National Hurricane Center's latest forecast show it is expected to become a category 1 hurricane by the afternoon and could reach category 3 strength by Friday.
Schools and offices shuttered Wednesday morning in Puerto Rico as Ernesto's rains hit the island. Authorities there are expecting power outages and heavy rainfall.
