A small plane crashed Saturday into a row of townhouses in Fairview, Oregon, sparking a large fire.

The twin Cessna 421C came down near Troutdale Airport around 10:30 a.m. local time, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The initial 911 call came in at 10:20 a.m. local time reporting black smoke, John Plock, a public information officer from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, said at a news conference Saturday.

The plane first hit a power pole or tower, causing it to fall down into a field which started a brush fire, Plock said. Since it is a swampy area, the fire didn't spread.

The aircraft then crashed into townhouses, which also caught fire, according to Plock. After the crash, the area was evacuated and residents of the adjoining townhomes were asked to evacuate as well.
