A first look at “Project Hail Mary,” the upcoming science fiction thriller starring Ryan Gosling, captures how a middle school teacher is suddenly tasked with saving the world — from space.
Based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name, “Project Hail Mary” centers around Ryland Grace’s mission to space after a mysterious astronomical phenomenon threatens the existence of humanity.
In a trailer for the film, which premiered exclusively on "TODAY" June 30, Gosling is pictured with long hair and a beard, shouting, “I just woke up from a coma.”
“And I’m not an astronaut,” he repeats several times — until the next scene shows him echoing the same sentiment well before his fateful mission.
The trailer explains that the sun is dying, and Ryland, a former scientist turned middle school teacher, might be the government’s only hope in understanding why.
