No injuries were reported, but two homes were destroyed by the blaze.
Spencer Fire & Emergency Services said two families "lost everything" and a third had damage to their home.
Two firefighters fell through ice while trying to get water from a nearby pond to tackle the blaze, as there are no hydrants in the area, but they were not hurt, the fire service added.
The cause of the fire is unknown and there is an ongoing investigation.
