Used 1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata

1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata “Special Edition” When the Mazda Miata first went on sale in 1989, it was a revolutionary model that was seen as the rebirth of the roadster, and encouraged countless other manufacturers to try their hand in the segment. Designed to follow in the footsteps of the classic British sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s, the Miata replicated the experience of driving those cars very well, with a crucial difference- it was exceptionally reliable. This 1991 “Special Edition” Miata is a particularly unique example that has been under the care of just one owner from new who purchased the car at Lee Johnson Mazda in Kirkland, WA on 5/5/1991. The “Special Edition” was the first limited-run Miata that Mazda offered in the United States, with just 4,000 units produced in 1991. If the Miata itself wasn’t enough of an ode to the classic British sports car for you, this was the one that would seal the deal. Offered only in British Racing Green, the Special Edition was then trimmed with a beautiful tan leather interior and numerous other special touches that give it a truly timeless look. This car currently shows just 44,910 miles and is build number 3,292 of the 4,000 produced. In essentially completely original condition, the car retains its removable hard top and 14-inch alloy wheels with factory specified wheel locks. The tan leather interior on the Special Edition cars was complimented by a leather wrapped steering wheel and a wooden shift knob and emergency brake handle from famous Italian trim supplier Nardi. The 4-spoke airbag steering wheel perfectly frames a beautifully simple gauge cluster with a white-on-black tachometer, speedometer, oil pressure, water temp and fuel level gauges. The center console features an AM/FM/Cassette/CD stereo and the seats have a unique Miata hallmark of the era - speakers built into the headrests. The overall condition of the interior is as you would expect for a car that has been so well cared for and the leather looks to be barely worn at all. Powering the first generation Miata is a dual overhead cam inline 4 cylinder engine that displaces 1.6 liters. Producing 116 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque, these early Miatas are known for being very free revving and having an exhaust sound that was specially tuned to mimic the noise of a classic Lotus Elan. Power is then sent through a fantastically notchy 5-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels via a factory specified limited slip differential. Although the power numbers may not sound particularly impressive by today’s standards, the Miata weighed in at just over 2,200 lbs and was renowned for its tossable handling. For years, used Miatas were seen as great cars to prepare for track use or an ideal “first sports car” for those just getting into the segment. Although both are still true, the number of original, clean examples has diminished significantly over the decades and finding one without stories like this car is getting more and more challenging. As you would expect, that means that values of nice cars are on the rise, although they are still exceptionally affordable for the enjoyment they provide.
