Honoured for his charitable work at the self-named Carter Center, every living president has now issued a statement about his career.

In a series of interviews with the BBC throughout his life, Carter reflected on how he envisioned his legacy, telling the BBC's Andrew Marr in 2011 that it was defined by "a commitment to peace".
