"San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was released from the hospital this afternoon as he continues to recover from a bullet wound to his chest," the 49ers said in an update Sunday afternoon.

In a statement Saturday, the 49ers said Pearsall "sustained a bullet wound to his chest and is in serious but stable condition." Police said at an evening news conference that Pearsall was talking after he was struck.

Mayor London Breed said on X that the attack took place in the Union Square community in the center of downtown. Police identified the suspect only as a 17-year-old boy.

"SFPD was on scene immediately and an arrest of the shooter was made," Breed said, referring to the San Francisco Police Department.Erin Pearsall, Pearsall's mother, said her son is "in good spirits right now" in a private Facebook post obtained by NBC News.
