What to look for in the DOJ report on the Uvalde mass shooting

The DOJ is releasing a report on what went wrong with law enforcement officers’ response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

UVALDE, Texas — A Justice Department investigation into how hundreds of law enforcement officers failed to stop a gunman who walked into an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and remained inside for more than an hour, killing 19 children and two teachers, will be released on Thursday.

Parents have long been frustrated by shifting stories and a lack of transparency about the response at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022, and wary that the report would provide answers and the accountability they have sought for nearly two years.

Attorney General Merrick Garland spent Wednesday in Uvalde visiting all 21 memorial murals, honoring the 21 people killed in the shooting. He also spent more than two hours with the families of those who were killed or injured, taking questions about the report. He’ll hold a news conference in Uvalde on Thursday afternoon for the report’s formal release.

A source briefed on the nearly 600-page report tells NBC News it includes disturbing new details, among them that authorities relayed incorrect information to some parents in the aftermath of the shooting about whether their children had survived or been killed.

It will also detail the failure of medical first responders and others who weren’t at the scene, according to the source.
