German police have shot a man they say was armed with “a pickaxe and an incendiary device” on the sidelines of a parade in Hamburg, just hours before the city was set to host its first match of the monthlong 2024 European Championship.

According to a police post on X, the person threatened officers before he was shot.

According to local media, one officer fired a warning shot before several other shots were fired.

The attacker was injured and is currently receiving treatment, the police said. The man was shot in the leg, The Associated Press reported, adding that no one else was hurt.
