Israel issues evacuation warning for Lebanese civilians as it launches 'extensive' strikes
Intensifying Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon killed more than 180 people and wounded almost 730 on Monday, Lebanon's Health Ministry said, a dramatic expansion of Israel's aerial attack.
TEL AVIV — Intensifying Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon killed more than 274 people and wounded almost 1,030 on Monday, Lebanon's Health Ministry said, a dramatic expansion of Israel's aerial attack that appeared to signal the start of a broad military campaign.
Israel says it stuck 300 "terrorist targets" inside Lebanon linked with Hezbollah, the militant group and political party that has regularly traded rockets with Israel since the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack. Monday not only brought the highest death toll of this yearlong front so far, it was the deadliest day of conflict with Israel since the 34-day war between the two countries in 2006.
The Israel Defense Forces said it was expanding the "extensive, precise strikes against terror targets" in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley along the country's eastern border and warned civilians to move away from Hezbollah positions.
"Whoever tries to hurt us, we hurt him even more," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an address at the military’s headquarters in Tel Aviv, adding that Israelis faced "complex days."
He said, "I promised that we would change the security balance, the balance of power in the north — this is exactly what we are doing. "
