India Monsoon Live Updates Today: Delhi is expected to witness moderate rainfall on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said in its forecast. According to the forecast, the city is likely to see rain spells over the next three days as the monsoon trough is likely to “continue to shift gradually northwards.”

Meanwhile, the weather department in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday said heavy rain is expected in the state over the next few days which may lead to disruption of essential services and trigger flash floods. The ongoing rainfall activity is very likely to increase from July 28 to 30.

Normal life continued to be impacted in some parts of the Hyderabad on Wednesday as incessant rains battered the state during the past few days. Several localities here received moderate to light rains, the Telangana State Development Planning Society said, citing rainfall data upto 8 AM on Wednesday.

According to authorities, seven people, primarily farmers, were struck and killed by lightning in a hamlet in Uttar Pradesh. This brings the state's total number of lightning-related fatalities this week to 49. The farmers were struck by lightning on Tuesday and perished instantly. They had sought refuge behind trees amid a pouring monsoon storm. According to police official Hem Raj Meena, the victims included four family members and several cow grazers near the city of Kaushambi.

The monsoon season in India lasts from June through September. According to Col. Sanjay Srivastava of the Indian Meteorological Department, since April, lightning has claimed the lives of close to 750 individuals throughout India. This includes the 16 fatalities earlier this month in Madhya Pradesh state in central India as well as the 20 fatalities in eastern Bihar state during the last two days. According to Sunita Narain, director-general of the Center for Science and Environment, the increase in lightning strikes is a result of global warming. (AP)
