Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates, July 21: The Congress accused the government of running away from a discussion on issues of price-rise and hike in GST rates, while senior ministers hit back and asked the Opposition to follow norms, as presiding officers of both Houses have expressed readiness to hold a discussion.

Parliament Monsoon Session 2022 Live Updates: The proceedings in both the Houses of Parliament have been adjourned for the day. Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned following a request from the government that the Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022 be taken up for consideration when Opposition members are also present in the House. Several Opposition members were not present in the House with many of them protesting outside over Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s questioning by the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald money laundering case. After the House reassembled at 2:15 pm following a routine adjournment, the chair, Bhartruhari Mahtab, took the sense of the House noting that the presence of Opposition was negligible, and adjourned the proceedings for the day.

Congress MPs in the Lok Sabha Thursday protested the questioning of Sonia Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering investigation the agency is carrying out into the affairs of the National Herald newspaper. In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi said, “Law is equal for everyone…is she a super human being?”

On Wednesday, the Congress accused the government of running away from a discussion on issues of price-rise and hike in GST rates, while senior ministers hit back and asked the Opposition to follow norms, as presiding officers of both Houses have expressed readiness to hold a discussion. The lower House was adjourned twice, before the Chair adjourned it for the day just after 4 pm, while Rajya Sabha proceeding washed out completely. Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi and Smriti Irani slammed the Opposition, particularly the Congress, and said the party has a “destructive” attitude towards democracy.

Vehicle recalls in India rose to a three-year high in 2021-22, with more than 13 lakh two-wheelers and passenger cars recalled over safety issues, Parliament was informed on Thursday.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari cited data maintained by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and said 8,64,557 two- wheelers and 4,67,311 passenger cars were recalled in 2021-22 in the country due to safety defects.
