But in reality, Jeep beat them to that title with the Grand Wagoneer which debuted more than 7 years before the first Range Rover was sold. Known as the SJ chassis to Jeep enthusiasts, the Grand Wagoneer had an almost unbelievable 29 year production run where countless updates and modifications were made, but the truck's chassis and original Brooks Stevens design stayed largely the same. This 1991 Grand Wagoneer was built in the final year of production and has received a complete restoration by marque experts Wagoneer World of Richardson, TX in 2014.As a 1991 build, this Grand Wagoneer benefits from all of the upgrades carried out on the model over its extensive production run and is also one of the rarest years, with just 1,560 trucks produced. The exterior color of Dark Hunter Green was a 1991 only shade and has become the most collectible-with only 150 produced, it is the color of the Grand Wagoneer at the Chrysler Museum, and the final Grand Wagoneer off the production line. With Chrysler buying the Jeep brand in 1987, quality and technology were greatly improved over the final few years and it is widely accepted that the 1991 cars are the best built Grand Wagoneers. One of the hallmarks of these trucks is the wood grain siding- available as an option back to the mid-1970s, the 1991 model saw the wood paneling updated with a different, higher quality applique. Although this example shows 92,265 miles on the odometer, it looks like it could have rolled out of the Jeep dealership last week both outside and on the interior.Inside the truck, the upholstery is finished in luxurious tan leather with cloth inserts on the seats. To mimic the exterior, wood accents are present on the doors and dashboard. As this is a final year Grand Wagoneer, it benefits from an updated overhead console from the Chrysler parts department which has brighter map lights, an exterior temperature display/compass and a sunglasses holder. In light of the truck's luxury status, it features all of the amenities you would expect including air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors and cruise control. The Jensen stereo system has been updated with a RediRad auxiliary input so you can enjoy your favorite music without having to find your tape collection.Powering this truck is AMC's famous 360ci V8, an engine which can trace its roots back to the early 1970s and is beloved by both muscle car and truck fans alike. Originally, this Grand Wagoneer would have had a 4 barrel carburetor on top, supplying the fuel but that has now been swapped out for a more modern throttle body fuel injection system. This offers a power increase as well as a slight bump in economy and most importantly, means you just don't really have to worry about your fuel system. This was paired to a HEI Ignition system so the truck reliably runs smoother and will just be all around more pleasant to drive. The Selec-Trac all wheel drive system is in good working order and allows the driver to swap from 2WD to 4WD simply and easily.Almost since they were brand new, these final year Grand Wagoneers have had a cult following and values have only been going up for well kept examples.
