Belongings of journalist, Indigenous expert who went missing in Amazon found tied underwater

Brazil’s search for Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips, who disappeared in the Amazon, advanced with the discovery of belongings in the river.

The bodies of a British journalist and a Brazilian Indigenous people's expert have been found, more than a week after they went missing in the Amazon, family members said Monday.

Dom Phillips, 57, a long-term contributor to The Guardian newspaper on Brazilian affairs, and his companion Bruno Pereira, 41, were last seen June 5 near the entrance of the Javari Valley Indigenous Territory, which borders Peru and Colombia.

The British ambassador to Brazil, Peter Wilson, told Phillips' family of the bodies' discovery in a phone call early Monday, according to the Guardian.

“He said he wanted us to know that … they had found two bodies,” Paul Sherwood, Phillips’s brother-in-law, told the newspaper. He said the location had not been disclosed but added that the bodies were “tied to a tree.”

Shortly after the news emerged of the bodies’ discovery, Brazil’s Federal Police released a statement saying that reports that the two men had been found were incorrect.
