Jan. 6 hearing focuses on Trump's inaction during Capitol riot

On Day 8 of the Jan. 6 committee hearings investigating the Capitol riot, the committee shared evidence and listened to witness testimony of President Donald Trump's inaction.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s aides and kids begged for him to stop the Capitol insurrection. Vice President Mike Pence’s Secret Service officers prepared to say goodbye to their families and use “lethal options” to clear a path to safety. A Trump supporter was shot dead as the MAGA crowd tried to keep the president in power by force.

As the violent and deadly riot raged around him, Trump sat cloistered in a private dining room next to the Oval Office watching Fox News.

He didn’t call for help; he dialed up allies in Congress who were under attack and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, an outside adviser who played a key role in efforts to overturn the election results.

When aides told Trump that Pence’s life was in danger — that the crowd wanted to hang the man first in line to the presidency — Trump egged his supporters on by tweeting that Pence lacked courage.
